MTL Projects acquired by Normec Group

By Tom Eatough

KBS highly recommended by MTL Projects founder

KBS Corporate has been praised for our “100%” support of MTL Projects and Mark Thompson Lifesciences following the companies’ sale to Normec Group, a Netherlands-based leader in testing, inspection, certification and compliance.

Tom Eatough, KBS Corporate Director, advised on the transaction, which left the MTL directors and entire team feeling “very enthusiastic” regarding the County Durham-based company’s continued development.

Mark Thompson Lifesciences was founded in 2014 and offers consultancy services to the pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device industries through support provided by a team of consultants, trainers and engineers.

In 2019, Mark Thompson, the Managing Director, formed MTL Projects along with his two sons, Chris and Josh, who both held a background and experience in engineering and became Validation Manager and Projects Manager respectively.

MTL Projects is an engineering and CQV (Commissioning, Qualification and Validation) company which specialises in sterilisation, depyrogenation, thermal system monitoring, hydrogen peroxide systems and steam quality testing.

The Group serves major pharmaceutical clients including Astra Zeneca, Pfizer and Siemens from its HQ in Bishop Auckland.

Explaining the role KBS played in the sale, Mark Thompson said in a five-star TrustPilot review: “We engaged KBS to market and manage the sale of a controlling interest in our companies.

“They were professional and value-adding from the beginning. The marketing material and detailed information packs they produced were accurate and very well presented.

“They did a lot of research into our industry sector to identify potential buyers we had not even heard of and supported the negotiations and the conclusion of the deal 100%.

“Good to deal with and responsive throughout. Would highly recommend.”

On the link-up with Normec, Mark added in the announcement of the deal: “We are very happy to announce that MTL Projects and Mark Thompson Lifesciences have been acquired by Normec Group, which has a very significant Healthcare division that we will be part of.

“This is an exciting time for the company and we are confident this will provide a catalyst for growth and development of our service offerings from our existing strong foundations.

“We will continue to deliver the same scope of services with the same quality, expertise and delivery that we always have. Our company management and point of contacts are unchanged. Mark Thompson will still be leading the Consultancy and Training, with the rest of the MTL Projects team delivering the Project and CQV Support as usual to our existing QMS (Quality Management System).”

Normec’s Healthcare division is focused on safety in medical settings, providing optimal  support and advice in the areas of fire and water safety and medical hygiene.

“Over the last five years, MTL Projects has grown in size and capability and being part of the Normec Healthcare group will further enable and support this development, including links to associated companies that can provide a range of complementary services,” added Mark Thompson.

“The MTL Directors and the whole team are very enthusiastic about this relationship and we are confident it will enable the continued development of the scope and sale of our services.

“MTL Projects has always been a consultancy-led organisation and this remains the business ethos.”

KBS Corporate’s Tom Eatough was also pleased to have achieved an outcome that fulfilled his client’s requirements.

“I’m delighted we managed to deliver this transaction for the shareholders in an accelerated timeframe,” he said.

“Normec is a great fit for MTL and I’m sure the acquisition will be a success for both parties moving forward.”
